Cucurbita pepo
Two plants will feed a household. Three will make you unpopular with your neighbours.
We don't sell online — plants travel badly and we'd rather you saw what you're buying. Ring 705-555-0126 and we'll hold it at the till for 48 hours.
We are obliged to tell you that two plants is enough. Nobody believes us, everybody plants four, and by August there are zucchini on the staff room table with a note saying please take these.
Pick them at 15 to 20 cm. The marrows the size of a forearm are a failure of attention, not an achievement — the flavour and texture go off completely once they get past about 25 cm.
Powdery mildew arrives every August. Water at the base, give them air, and accept that the plants will look rough by September having already given you everything.

Basil, thyme, sage, oregano, rosemary, parsley, chives, mint — and mint stays in a pot.
