About this plant
It looks like a succulent because it is one, and it wants the same treatment: sun, sharp drainage, and being left alone. The commonest way to kill it is kindness in the form of a watering can.
Late-season bees work it hard in September when there is very little else flowering, which is a real argument for it beyond the way it looks.
If it flops open in the middle, the soil is too rich or too wet. Cutting it back by half in early June — the Chelsea chop — produces a shorter, sturdier plant that will not split.
