Goldsturm is the cultivar that made this plant a fixture, and it is still the best of them — denser and more uniform than the straight species without looking like it came from a catalogue.
It hits its stride exactly when a perennial border starts looking tired, which is the whole argument for it. Paired with grasses it carries a bed from August to hard frost.
Deer will browse it in a hard year, so if you back onto bush, plant it where you can see it happening.

The workhorse of a pollinator border. Flowers for two months and feeds goldfinches all winter.
