THE NAME
Before there were roads here, there was a portage — nine miles overland from the head of Kempenfelt Bay to Willow Creek, and on to Georgian Bay. Everything that moved through this part of the province moved on somebody's back along that trail.
We took the name because we liked what it stood for: a stopping place at the end of a long haul, where you put the load down and someone feeds you properly.
The kitchen is seasonal and stubbornly local — Georgian Bay trout, Simcoe County beef and produce, cheese from within a two-hour drive. The bread and pasta are made here. So is most of what's behind the bar.

FROM THE MENU

Ontario beef, cast-iron seared, with confit garlic butter, roast carrot and hand-cut fries.

Ontario cheeses and cured meats, honeycomb, pickles, grainy mustard, house crackers and warm bread.

Pan-roasted with brown butter, capers and dill, over crushed new potatoes and spring peas.

Two smashed patties, aged cheddar, house sauce, bread-and-butter pickle, on a milk bun.
Most of the menu travels. Order ahead, pick a time, and it'll be boxed and waiting at the host stand — no queue, no guessing.
